SET is a quick internal scan: Sensation, Emotion, Thought. It helps you map what's happening inside without immediately spiraling into the story.
The aim isn't to fix anything. It's to notice what's here, especially at the sensation level, so you can respond earlier and more skillfully. The key skill: sensation over story.
We're not trying to force sensation. Just practicing noticing what's actually here, even if what's here is numbness. If you notice numbness or flatness, that's not failure. It's often a brilliant survival strategy your system built to help you function when feeling everything would have been too much. Be patient; this gets easier over time.
When to use it
Try SET when you notice:
- you feel "off" but can't name why
- you're stuck in rumination or urgency
- you're about to react (email, text, conversation)
- you want to build an early warning system
Before you start
- Choose a mild stressor if you're practicing (a 3/10).
- There are no right answers.
- If it's too activating, do orienting first.
If scanning inward increases anxiety, open your eyes and orient to the room. Then try again with a lighter touch, or skip it for today.
